2015 Montevetrano Colli di Salerno
The story of Montevetrano is the stuff of legend. During the 1980s Silvia Imparato collaborated with renowned consultant Riccardo Cotarella
I have reviewed one wine from Montevetrano: the 2015 Montevetrano Colli di Salerno (97 points). Montevetrano also features in one journal article on this site.
Montevetrano is the visionary project of Silvia Imparato, a photographer who returned to her family’s estate near Salerno in the 1980s. Working with the renowned consultant Riccardo Cotarella on a small vineyard site, she set out to put Campania on the world stage, and the wine they created became an instant cult classic, often called the Super Tuscan, or the Sassicaia, of the South.
Montevetrano Rosso is an audacious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the native Aglianico, aged in French barrique. It combines the power and structure of the Bordeaux varieties with the earthiness and vibrant acidity of the Italian south, and it showed that Campania could make wines of international style and profound elegance.
With age, as in the 2015, the wine reveals the pedigree that made its name, a landmark in the modern history of southern Italian wine.
