I have reviewed one wine from Piaggia: the 2020 Piaggia Carmignano Riserva (97 points).
Piaggia is a benchmark for Carmignano, one of Tuscany’s smallest and most prestigious DOCGs and one of Italy’s oldest wine regions. Founded by Mauro Vannucci in the 1970s and now run by his daughter Silvia, the estate makes wines of richness and intensity from limestone soils.
The Carmignano blend, mostly Sangiovese with a significant share of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, has been traditional here for centuries, long before Bolgheri and long before the term Super Tuscan existed. Carmignano was the first zone to officially blend Sangiovese with Bordeaux varieties.
Piaggia’s Riserva is a modern classic, combining the structure of Bordeaux with the soul of Tuscany. Aged in French oak, the 2020 is pure silk: ripe black cherry, cassis and plum with tobacco, cedar and Mediterranean herbs, soft tannins and a seamless balance of bright acidity and rich fruit, a timeless, old-school Super Tuscan experience.
