Berlucchi “61” Franciacorta Extra Brut
Guido Berlucchi is the winery that started it all for Franciacorta. In 1961 the oenologist Franco Ziliani persuaded Guido Berlucchi to make a sparkling wine by the French method, and Italy’s most prestigious sparkling-wine region was born. Franciacorta gained DOC status in 1967 and in 1995 became the first Italian sparkling wine recognised as a DOCG for bottle-fermented wines.
Today Berlucchi remains a giant of the area and the introduction to Franciacorta for many drinkers. Despite its size, it has moved towards organic viticulture and higher quality standards in recent years.
The “61” line pays homage to that first vintage. The Extra Brut, mostly Chardonnay with a touch of Pinot Nero from limestone-rich soils and aged at least 24 months on the lees, offers citrus, green apple and white flowers over brioche and hazelnut, with a lively, creamy mousse and a clean mineral finish. The vintage “61” Nature, a zero-dosage Chardonnay and Pinot Nero aged more than five years on the lees, is purer and more mineral, with citrus and toasted nuts.
