Ovello is one of the core MGAs within the Barbaresco commune, facing southeast at 170–220 metres altitude on Tortonian marls. Best known through the Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative, which has bottled it as a single-vineyard Riserva since 1967 — one of the longest unbroken single-vineyard track records in the appellation.

The Terroir The southeast exposure and lower altitude give Ovello a fresh, aromatic character typical of the commune: more immediately approachable than southwest-facing Rabajà, with greater perfume and finesse than the power sites. The Tortonian marls are productive at this altitude, giving wines of consistent quality year after year. Its lower, cooler position on the northern edge of the commune lends a lift and brightness of fruit that sets Ovello apart from the warmer sites above the village.

The Critical Take The wines show rose, cherry, violet, iron, and dried herbs, with silky tannins that integrate relatively early. Ovello is typically among the more accessible of the Produttori’s nine Riserva bottlings — the entry point for those discovering the complexity of site-specific Barbaresco. Approachable young yet capable of aging fifteen years in Riserva form, Ovello is the ideal introduction to single-vineyard Barbaresco — and, thanks to the Produttori, one of the best-value ways into the appellation’s complexity.

At the Table Ovello’s fresh, silky character pairs beautifully with mid-weight Piedmontese fare: tajarin with butter and sage, agnolotti del plin, roasted rabbit, or a plate of vitello and porcini. Its supple tannins need only a short hour’s decant for young bottles; serve at 16 to 18 degrees in a Burgundy glass. Drinkable from six to eight years yet capable of holding fifteen in a strong vintage, Ovello is as happy at a weeknight dinner as at a special occasion — versatility that is the Produttori house style at its most winning. It is also an unusually forgiving wine to serve, holding its charm across a range of temperatures and needing little fuss, which makes it a natural choice for a relaxed dinner among friends rather than a formal tasting. Open a bottle, pour freely, and let its silky fruit do the rest without ceremony.
