2024 Quantico Etna Bianco
If the Rosso is the “Burgundy of the Mediterranean,” then the 2024 Quantico Etna Bianco is undoubtedly its Chablis. Sourced
I have reviewed two wines from Quantico, from the 2023 to 2024 vintages, all from Etna. Scores range from 94 to 94, averaging 94; the highest is the 2024 Quantico Etna Bianco (94 points).
Quantico is a small, artisanal project on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, flying under the radar of the big names on the volcano. Founded by Emanuele Ranno and Giovanni Raiti, it takes its name from quantum physics, reflecting the idea that small, unseen forces such as soil microbiology have a large impact. The vines are farmed organically in the Solicchiata district, and the winemaking is low-intervention, with native yeasts and minimal sulfur.
While many Etna Rossos are becoming denser and more extracted, Quantico’s stays steadfastly traditional. Made from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, it is pale, fragrant and high-toned, with fine, sandy tannins framing bright fruit and a volcanic salinity.
The Etna Bianco, Carricante with a touch of Catarratto, is the Chablis to that Burgundy: wet stone, lemon zest and green apple, white flowers, wild anise and mint, bone dry, tense and saline, with a grip etched by volcanic minerality.
