The Sandy Renaissance Lessona is perhaps the most elegant and “Burgundian” expression of Nebbiolo in all of Italy. Located in Alto Piemonte (Northern Piedmont), just west of the Sesia River, it was historically one of Italy’s most prestigious appellations—favored by prime ministers and royalty in the 19th century—before being nearly abandoned after WWII. Its revival in the early 2000s (led by visionaries like Paolo De Marchi of Proprietà Sperino) is one of the great success stories of modern Italian wine.

The Secret of the Sand: What defines Lessona is soil. Unlike the heavy clays of Barolo or the volcanic rocks of Gattinara, Lessona sits on a prehistoric seabed of yellow marine sand (sabbie marine). These acidic, mineral-rich sands have virtually no organic matter, forcing the vines to dig deep for nutrients. This unique terroir strips Nebbiolo (locally called Spanna) of its aggressive tannins and weight, leaving behind a wine of transparency, saltiness, and incredible aromatic lift.

The “Femme Fatale” of the North: If Gattinara is the masculine, iron-fisted king of the north, Lessona is the queen. It does not shout; it whispers. It is often pale garnet in color, sometimes translucent. On the palate, it feels weightless but possesses an electric, nervous energy and a finish that tastes of sea salt and dried flowers. It is a wine for those who value finesse over power, often compared to Chambolle-Musigny in Burgundy.

The Terroir Unique soils composed of bright yellow marine sands (sabbie marine), acidic and almost free of limestone — the opposite of the calcareous marls of the Langhe. Vineyards sit at 200–300 metres on gentle slopes, sheltered by the Alps to the north and cooled by air descending off Monte Rosa, whose snowfields are visible from the vines on a clear day. The growing season is shorter and cooler than in southern Piedmont, and harvest usually falls a week or two earlier than in Barolo. The appellation is tiny — a handful of hectares under vine against the thousands it held before phylloxera and the post-war exodus to the textile mills of Biella.

The Critical Take Because of the sandy soil, Lessona produces the most elegant, silken, and perfumed expression of Nebbiolo in Northern Piedmont, often compared to Burgundy.

Grape Varieties Nebbiolo, known locally as Spanna, must make up at least 85% of the blend. The balance may include Vespolina, which contributes pepper and a lifted floral note, and Uva Rara, called Bonarda Novarese here, which softens the mid-palate. Many of the finest bottlings are pure Nebbiolo, but the old field-blend practice of the Alto Piemonte survives, and small percentages matter more than the numbers suggest in a wine this transparent.

At the Table Lessona asks for restraint rather than richness. It is at its best with veal, guinea fowl, mushroom risotto and the freshwater fish of the northern lakes, and it will be flattened by heavily reduced sauces or aged, salty cheese. Serve at 16–17°C in a large glass and give a young bottle an hour open. Good examples drink well at five years and continue for twenty.
