Pora occupies a southwest-facing slope on the Barbaresco commune hillside at 180–240 metres altitude, on Tortonian Sant’Agata Fossili marls. The southwest exposure — facing away from the cooler southeast aspect of Asili and Ovello — gives Pora a warmer, more powerful profile than most of the commune’s MGAs.

The Terroir The wines are deeply coloured, richly fruited, and built on firmer tannins than the more elegant southeast-facing sites, leaning toward the power end of the Barbaresco spectrum without achieving the sheer mass of Rabajà. The Tortonian marls are well-exposed here, delivering consistent ripening and concentration. The southwest face bakes in afternoon sun, and the well-drained marls concentrate the fruit, giving Pora a depth of colour and firmness of tannin that leans decisively toward power.

The Critical Take In profile: dark cherry, dried rose, tobacco, iron, and liquorice, with a robust structure that requires ten or more years to fully integrate. Pora is consistently bottled as a single-vineyard Riserva by the Produttori del Barbaresco and represents one of the more structured expressions in their celebrated range. Pora rewards the cellar rather than the impulse: give it a decade and it delivers one of the Produttori’s most structured, brooding, and satisfying Riservas.

At the Table Pora’s robust frame is made for hearty winter cooking: brasato al Barbaresco, braised short ribs, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, and truffled polenta. A young bottle wants a two-hour decant to unwind its firm tannins; serve at 17 to 18 degrees in a large Burgundy glass. It needs ten years or more to fully integrate and holds comfortably beyond fifteen in good vintages. Mature Pora, with a wedge of aged Castelmagno, shows why the Produttori single out this parcel for their more powerful, ageworthy style. Save it for the cold months, when its brooding depth and warming structure come into their own beside the slow-cooked dishes of a Piedmontese winter. And do not be afraid to give even a mature bottle an hour in the decanter — this is a wine whose power benefits from air at every age, unfolding layers of tar, dried rose, and liquorice the longer it sits in the glass.
