Prié Blanc

The world's highest-planted white—grown above 1,000 meters on glacial moraines at Morgex in the Aosta Valley—producing icy, mineral wines of unique alpine character.

Prié Blanc is a grape variety most associated in Italy with Valle d'Aosta and Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle. I have reviewed two wines made from it.

The Grape of the High Alps Prié Blanc is the white variety behind Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle, the wine of the highest vineyards in Europe, grown at the foot of Mont Blanc in the Valle d’Aosta. Cultivated on tiny alpine terraces up to 1,200 metres and beyond, it produces light, fresh, delicately floral whites of striking purity and high acidity — mountain wines shaped by altitude, and unlike any others in Italy.

A Native of the Valle d’Aosta Prié Blanc is an ancient variety native to the Valle d’Aosta, Italy’s smallest and most mountainous wine region, tucked into the north-western Alps near the French and Swiss borders. It is grown almost exclusively in the upper valley around the villages of Morgex and La Salle, where it has been cultivated for centuries and remains deeply tied to the local, alpine culture of high-altitude farming.

Ungrafted Vines at the Roof of Europe Extraordinarily, Prié Blanc grows on its own ungrafted rootstock, because the sandy alpine soils and extreme altitude spared the vineyards from phylloxera, which cannot survive at such heights. Trained low on traditional pergolas of stone and larch to capture warmth and shelter from frost, these are among the highest and most spectacular vineyards in Europe, worked entirely by hand.

In the Vineyard Adapted to a short, cool alpine growing season, Prié Blanc ripens early — a necessity at such altitude — while retaining piercing acidity. The vines endure harsh mountain conditions, intense sunlight and dramatic day-night temperature swings, all of which concentrate aroma and preserve freshness. Yields are small and cultivation heroic, every vine tended by hand on precipitous, terraced slopes.

Appearance and Structure Prié Blanc gives very pale, light-bodied dry whites of low to moderate alcohol, delicate body and vivid, mouth-watering acidity. These are wines of transparency and tension rather than weight, their alpine freshness and mineral cut giving them a bracing, crystalline quality. The grape also lends itself to sparkling wine, its high acidity and lightness ideally suited to mountain fizz.

Aromatic Profile The aromas are delicate and alpine — white flowers, mountain herbs, citrus, green apple and a cool, mineral note that seems to echo the snow and stone of its surroundings. Subtle rather than showy, Prié Blanc offers finesse and freshness, its floral, herbal and mineral character capturing the pure, high-altitude environment in which the grape uniquely thrives.

In the Cellar Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle is generally vinified in stainless steel to preserve its delicate aromatics, crystalline freshness and low alcohol, producing pure, unoaked mountain whites. The grape’s high acidity also makes it excellent for traditional-method sparkling wine, and a rare, prized late-harvest icewine is made from grapes left to freeze at extreme altitude, showcasing another facet of the variety.

Key Expressions

  • Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle DOC: the light, fresh, floral alpine classic.
  • Traditional-method sparkling: high-altitude fizz of great freshness.
  • Icewine / late-harvest: rare sweet wines from frozen mountain grapes.
  • Ungrafted old-vine cuvées: pure expressions from Europe’s highest vineyards.

The Question of Aging Prié Blanc is generally made to be enjoyed young, within a year or two, when its delicate aromatics and bracing freshness are at their finest. The still wines are not built for long cellaring, though the sparkling and sweet styles can hold longer; the pleasure of the variety lies above all in its youthful purity, tension and vivid alpine energy.

At the Table Light, fresh and high in acidity, Prié Blanc is a natural aperitif and a fine partner for alpine cuisine — mountain cheeses such as Fontina, cured meats, freshwater fish and delicate antipasti. Its crisp, mineral character cuts through the richness of mountain cooking, while the sparkling versions make a refreshing, celebratory start to a meal.

Why It Matters Prié Blanc is one of the wonders of Italian viticulture — an ancient, ungrafted grape thriving at the roof of Europe, where few vines could survive. Its light, pure, alpine wines are inseparable from the extraordinary mountain vineyards that produce them, making it a living emblem of heroic, high-altitude winemaking in the shadow of Mont Blanc.
