Refosco

Friuli's austere native red—dark, earthy, and plum-rich, a wine of genuine character that pairs magnificently with the region's game and cured meats.

Refosco is a grape variety most associated in Italy with Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit and Friuli Grave. I have reviewed one wine made from it.

The Dark Red of Friuli Refosco is the most important native red grape of Friuli in Italy’s north-east, a region far better known for its whites. Specifically Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso — “Refosco with the red stalk” — it produces deeply coloured, juicy, fresh reds with a distinctive dark fruit and herbal character. It is the proud red counterpoint to Friuli’s celebrated white wines, and one of the most characterful native reds of the north-east.

Origins and Name Refosco is an ancient grape of the Friuli–Slovenia borderlands, and the name covers a family of related varieties, of which Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is the most widely grown and prized. The name refers to the characteristic red stalk (peduncolo) of the grape bunches, a distinguishing feature of this most important member of the Refosco family.

A Grape of the North-East Refosco’s heartland is the plains and hills of Friuli, especially the Colli Orientali, Friuli Grave and Isonzo zones, extending across the border into Slovenia. The region’s varied soils — from the marl-and-sandstone ponca hills to the gravelly plains — and its cool, alpine- and Adriatic-influenced climate give the wines their freshness and dark, juicy fruit.

In the Vineyard A vigorous, late-ripening variety, Refosco needs warmth and a good site to ripen fully and tame its naturally high acidity and firm tannins. Grown on the better hillsides and farmed for restrained yields, it develops deep colour, dark fruit and a savoury, herbal character, while the cool climate ensures the wines retain their characteristic freshness.

Appearance and Structure Refosco gives deeply coloured, purple-tinged wines of medium to full body, with firm tannins and notably high, fresh acidity. The combination of dark fruit and vivid acidity makes the wines both substantial and lively, juicy and structured at once, with a savoury, sometimes rustic grip that keeps them fresh and food-friendly.

Aromatic Profile The signature is dark fruit — blackberry, black cherry and plum — lifted by violet, dried herbs, black pepper, a hint of almond and a savoury, herbal character. The fruit is dark and juicy, the impression fresh and savoury rather than ripe and jammy, with a characteristic bitter-edged, herbal finish.

In the Cellar Refosco is made from fresh, juicy, fruit-forward reds for early drinking to more structured, oak-aged bottlings built for ageing. Its high acidity and firm tannins reward careful winemaking and, in the best examples, oak ageing that softens the structure while preserving the grape’s vivid dark fruit and savoury freshness.

Key Expressions

  • Friuli Colli Orientali Refosco: the benchmark — structured, dark-fruited, age-worthy reds from the hills.
  • Friuli Grave & Isonzo Refosco: fresher, juicier styles from the plains.
  • Oak-aged Riserva bottlings: more structured, ambitious expressions of the grape.
  • Carso Refosco (Terrano): a distinct, high-acid relative grown on the Carso plateau.

The Question of Aging Much Refosco is enjoyed young for its juicy, fresh dark fruit, but the best structured and oak-aged bottlings age well for several years, the dark fruit deepening into dried berry, leather, tobacco and herbs while the bright acidity keeps the wines lively.

At the Table Its dark fruit, firm tannin and fresh acidity make Refosco a versatile food red, especially with the hearty cuisine of Friuli: roast and grilled meats, game, frico and cheese dishes, cured meats and mushroom dishes. Its freshness cuts through rich, fatty fare with ease.

A Friulian Identity In a region whose international fame rests almost entirely on white wine, Refosco gives Friuli a red identity of its own. It is the wine of the Friulian table, poured in the region’s osterie alongside its hearty cured meats and cheeses, and its combination of dark fruit, freshness and savoury grip makes it unmistakably a product of the cool north-east rather than the warm south.

Why It Matters Refosco is the proud native red of white-wine Friuli — a deeply coloured, fresh, savoury grape that gives the north-east a serious red of its own, and a characterful counterpoint to the region’s famous whites in one of Italy’s finest wine territories.
