I have reviewed one wine from Malgiacca: the 2019 Malgiacca ‘Malgiacca’ Super Tuscan (96 points).
Malgiacca is a small, artisanal estate in the hills of Lucca, in Tuscany, making rare and deeply personal wines with methods that echo the past. Its red is not a typical Tuscan wine but a field blend and a labour of love.
About half is Sangiovese, supported by traditional Tuscan grapes such as Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo, and by Barbera, Merlot and Syrah. The winemaking is profoundly traditional: grapes are destemmed by hand over a sieve, crushed by foot and fermented with native yeasts in small open-top vats, then the wine matures for 12 months, mostly in used oak, and is bottled unfiltered.
In 2019, after a difficult, humid spring, careful vineyard work brought perfectly ripe, savory grapes. The wine unites finesse with a rich Mediterranean soul: detailed fruit, forest floor and iron-like minerality on the nose, and a deep, balanced palate with spicy and balsamic undertones. It is an authentic wine for those who value character over polish.
