2021 Petra Toscana Rosso
I wish I could attach a picture to this review. Petra, with its jaw-dropping modern cellar designed by Mario Botta
I have reviewed one wine from Petra: the 2021 Petra Toscana Rosso (96 points).
Petra is as much an architectural statement as a winery. Owned by the Terra Moretti group, also behind Bellavista, it has a cellar designed by the architect Mario Botta and carved into the rocky hillside of Suvereto, one of the most ambitious wine buildings in Italy. The estate focuses on international varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, grown on the iron-rich, stony soils of the Val di Cornia in the Maremma.
The wines are bold, sunny and structured, and they represent the ambition of the Tuscan coast, combining design, technology and terroir.
The flagship Petra is a Bordeaux-style blend of great power and ageing potential. The 2021, from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, offers cassis, blackberry and plum lifted by graphite, cedar and the macchia mediterranea that defines the coast. Full-bodied, dense and concentrated but never just a fruit bomb, it ends long and savory with dark chocolate and herbs: powerful, yet unmistakably Italian.
