A coastal appellation in southwestern Sicily, on the Mediterranean shore of Agrigento province, centered on the town of Menfi and the Belice river valley. Far from the Baroque southeast, Menfi belongs to the windswept, sun-baked western coast of the island — a very different climate and character from Noto or Pachino.
The Terroir Sandy soils over clay, shaped by the Belice river and the constant Mediterranean breeze off the sea. The coastal influence moderates summer temperatures slightly, making it more suitable for aromatic whites than the scorching inland zones. Elevation is low (under 200 meters), and irrigation is common due to drought stress.
The Wines A broad DOC covering both reds (Nero d’Avola, Syrah, Merlot, Sangiovese) and whites (Inzolia, Grecanico, Chardonnay, Grillo). The whites — particularly Chardonnay and Inzolia — are the most distinctive, showing a saline, citrus-driven freshness from the sea influence. The Syrah planted here by Planeta produces one of Sicily’s most acclaimed international-variety reds.
The Settesoli Model Menfi’s modern history is inseparable from Cantine Settesoli, the cooperative founded in 1958 that came to farm a substantial share of the district. Its significance is agronomic rather than commercial: from the 1990s it ran large-scale varietal and clonal trials across its members’ land, mapping which grapes actually suited which parcels in a zone that had previously planted whatever the bulk market wanted. The Mandrarossa line was created to bottle the results. Whatever one makes of the wines, the research changed planting decisions across western Sicily and gave growers data they had never had.
The Wind The defining variable here is not heat but air. The Mediterranean blows across this stretch of coast almost continuously, and it does three things: it drops effective temperatures below what the latitude suggests, it dries the canopy and suppresses fungal disease in a zone that consequently farms largely organically, and it thickens grape skins, which shows in the structure of the reds. Vineyards run nearly to the shoreline, and the salt is measurable in the wines.
The Critical Take Menfi is where Planeta built the estate that launched the modern Sicilian wine renaissance. The cooperative Settesoli dominates volume; Planeta defines quality. Seek the whites and the Syrah.
At the Table Coastal Sicilian cooking: pasta with sardines and wild fennel, grilled swordfish, caponata, and the red prawns landed at nearby Sciacca and Mazara del Vallo. The whites at 10–12°C. The Syrah handles grilled lamb and aubergine, and takes a light chill better than its alcohol suggests.
