I have reviewed one wine from Caiarossa: the 2021 Caiarossa “Caiarossa” Toscana (97 points).
Caiarossa lies in Riparbella, just north of Bolgheri, a biodynamic estate owned by the Albada Jelgersma family, also owners of Château Giscours in Bordeaux. The vineyards are a patchwork of soils, limestone, gravel and clay, planted to a wide range of varieties including Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Alicante. The winemaking is precise and unusual, with Feng Shui principles guiding the cellar and fermentation in concrete eggs.
The flagship Caiarossa is a luxurious multi-variety blend that captures the warmth of the Tuscan coast with a freshness and spicy complexity that set it apart from its Bolgheri neighbours. The 2021 combines 30% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Sangiovese, 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Grenache. Aged in oak, it offers black cherry, ripe plum and red currant with violet and cedar spice, a rich, layered palate of smooth tannins and bright acidity, and a refined texture that keeps its freshness.
